COVID-19 Advisory – March 16th: Tanzania Jamat

As the Jamat is aware, the Government of Tanzania confirmed a case of Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, on 16th March, in Arusha.

As precautionary measures, with cases of the virus growing globally, Jamats around the world are already taking necessary steps to reduce any risk. Based on the directives of the Government of Tanzania issued on March 13th, it is advised that all communities and individuals take safety measures to stay healthy and prevent infection.

In order to protect yourself, the Jamat is advised to take the following measures:

  1. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water throughout the day, or use hand sanitizer when water is not available;
  2. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a flexed elbow or tissue and disposed-off that tissue immediately in designated bins.
  3. Avoid touching your face.
  4. Avoid contact with people who are coughing and sneezing
  5. If you have flu like symptoms, stay home
  6. Drink lots of fluids, such as water and orange juice to keep hydrated

It is important to note that there is no vaccine or cure for Coronavirus but if an individual has contracted the virus, most cases are mild and treatable with proper medical care.

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, dry cough and shortness of breath, seek urgent medical advice. Call your doctor before leaving your home or visiting the hospital.

We also urge Jamati members to keep enough non-perishable food and medicines at home in case of unforeseen shortages. This includes canned food, rice, salt, sugar, pasta, beans and other daily necessities.

Finally, the Jamat is advised to avoid forwarding or circulating any information on social media and WhatsApp that is not from valid sources. Credible sources include the Government of Tanzania, National Council, and the World Health Organization.

The National Council will follow the directives issued by the government of Tanzania and keep the Jamat informed of new developments. We continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates through announcements, the Khabar website, SMS messages where applicable, and The Ismaili Tanzania Facebook and Instagram.

The National Council appreciates the Jamat’s cooperation and understanding with this matter and shall be keeping the community informed on precautionary measures and best practice in one’s daily life in order to stay safe and healthy.
